One photon...many pieces of information

The work of Nicolas Fabre - a lecturer in theoretical quantum technologies at Télécom Paris-IP Paris, and a member of the Information Processing and Communications Laboratory (LTCI*) - takes us into the universe of the infinitely small, and involves some surprising physics. The researcher takes advantage of the color of single photons to encode quantum information for use in quantum technologies. This research, presented at the IP Paris Science Day in September 2024, is finding an echo in the science of measurement (metrology) and communications.

Multi-photon microscopy...and many facets

Derived from extremely short-pulse laser technologies and based on light-matter interactions, multi-photon microscopy reveals information not observable with conventional microscopy. Emmanuel Beaurepaire is CNRS Research Director at the Optics and Biosciences Laboratory (LOB) at École Polytechnique. He uses the device on biological tissues to observe them in depth with micrometric precision. His work, presented at the Institut Polytechnique de Paris Science Day in September 2024, lies at the frontier between fundamental and applied research, with potential applications in the biomedical field. The aim is to establish relevant biological measurements from the images obtained.

Cultural heritage under the microscope

It's not just biological samples that the multi-photon microscopy platform of the Optics and Biosciences Laboratory* (LOB) is studying. Gaël Latour, a teacher-researcher at the University of Paris-Saclay, who carries out his research at the LOB at the École Polytechnique, applies this analysis technique to ancient objects, in particular parchments, as he presented at the IP Paris science day dedicated to light in September 2024. The aim is to provide detailed, objective information on their state of preservation, without altering them.

Institut Polytechnique de Paris researcher has been awarded the prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant

Yves Le Yaouanq is Associate Professor in the Economics Department at École Polytechnique and researcher at the Center for Research in Economics and Statistics (CREST*). He has just received a grant from the European Research Council (ERC Consolidator) to carry out the PROSPECT project. Drawing on the field of behavioral economics, Yves Le Yaouanq's work studies decision-making by individuals, using realistic models that take into account the cognitive biases that tend to affect individual choices. In particular, PROSPECT explores the way in which individuals project themselves into information they do not yet know, using experiments carried out with cohorts.

The sciences of photovoltaics

Every year, humanity uses 18 TW of power for its activities, equivalent to the amount of energy contained in 15 billion tonnes of crude oil. The Sun provides 10,000 times more. In the current context of energy transition, the benefits of solar energy are clear to see. At the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, scientists with complementary specialties are taking the conversion of this energy into electricity head-on, as they demonstrated on September 19, 2024, during the IP Paris Research Day dedicated to light. In their sights: greater efficiency and optimal use of photovoltaic cells.
