Institut Polytechnique de Paris announces the launch of the fourth edition of the call for projects "Prematuration", offering a unique opportunity for researchers and innovators to turn their promising ideas into innovative projects. The main aim of this call for projects is to clarify the relevant application of these projects and to achieve an initial proof of concept.

An article published in the journal RNA, in which researchers from the Structural Biology of the Cell Laboratory (BIOC*) took part, investigates the synthesis and maturation pathways of ribosomal RNA in three archaea living in different extreme environments. Using a new sequencing technique, this study revealed similarities between the three archaea, providing a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in adapting to extreme conditions.

A joint study by French and Czech scientists involving the Optics and Biosciences Laboratory has just carried out the first analysis of the presence of specific DNA structures, known as G-quadruplexes, in ancient genomes of the hepatitis B virus, some of which date back as far as 10,000 years. This study reveals that the proportion of G-quadruplexes in these genomes has increased over the millennia, becoming close to that of the current human genome.

Thanks to a spectroscopy technique originally developed for materials science, water is becoming a novel means of monitoring the biological response of cells to a specific stress, such as exposure to a photosensitive therapeutic molecule. This is the finding of scientists in a study published in the journal Advanced Science.

Ammonia plays an important role in the mechanisms at work inside the planets Uranus and Neptune. Experiments carried out at the Laboratoire pour l'Utilisation des Lasers Intenses (Intense Lasers Laboratory) have made it possible to reproduce the extreme conditions that prevail inside these planets, and have revealed the fusion of 'superionic' ammonia ice. These results are reported in the journal Nature Physics.

Researchers from the Solid Mechanics Laboratory of Institut Polytechnique de Paris, along with collaborators from the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) in Germany and the Technical University of Denmark have performed a decisive experiment showing that dislocations (crystalline defects) in 3D printed metallic alloys continue to evolve after their formation during the fabrication process. Since dislocations play a major role in the mechanics of materials, these results are the first step towards tailoring the properties of alloys during 3D printing.

The fight against global warming is a crucial challenge that requires us to make the transition to carbon neutrality by the end of the century at the latest. To achieve this balance between anthropogenic emissions and absorptions of greenhouse gases, we need to fundamentally transform our production and consumption patterns. This transition requires the concerted efforts of public authorities, the private sector and civil society.
