Two researchers from the Institut Polytechnique de Paris receive the L'Oréal-Unesco For Women In Science 2024 Young Talents award
Expertise and excellence rewarded
The two young researchers are being rewarded for the excellence of their work and the remarkable expertise they have demonstrated in their fields. The prize also recognizes their commitment to a fairer, more sustainable future. As such, they receive a significant endowment (€20,000 and €15,000) and access to a leadership training program.
The work of Solenne Gaucher, a member of the Inria FAIRPLAY and COMETE project teams, aims to measure and prevent discrimination linked to algorithms and their influence on our daily lives. To this end, she is developing fair machine learning algorithms, i.e. free from the biases present in the data they process. For her part, Madeleine Kubasch, who is also part of the Inria MERGE project team, is using mathematics to understand how the distribution of human contacts at home and in the workplace influences the spread of an epidemic. This has potential applications in public health, particularly in the development of control strategies.

A woldwide network
Today, women are still under-represented in scientific research, particularly in France, where they account for just 29% of researchers, compared with almost 32% worldwide. The L'Oréal-Unesco prize opens the doors to a network of over 4400 women researchers worldwide, a source of synergy, inspiration and support in the face of the obstacles they may encounter in their careers.

Solenne Gaucher is a post-doctoral statistician at the Center for Research in Economics and Statistics. She was awarded the prestigious L'Oréal Unesco prize for women in science. Her main research interests are sequential learning and sequential decision problems, as well as fair machine learning.

Madeleine Kubasch is a PhD student at the Center for Applied Mathematics at École Polytechnique and at INRAE's Mathematics and Computer Science Applied from the Genome to the Environment (MaIAGE) unit. She works on mathematical models of epidemic propagation.
