Focus on the event "Gérer ses données sur le plateau de Saclay "

10 Mar. 2025
On February 11, 2025, the Institut Polytechnique de Paris hosted the event "Gérer ses données sur le plateau de Saclay", co-organized by the libraries of the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, the Department of Libraries, Information and Open Science of the Université Paris-Saclay and the Data Infrastructure and Scientific Computing service unit of the Ecole Polytechnique. This event brought together around sixty data professionals (engineers, researchers, librarians, research support staff) to identify the data management issues and challenges faced by scientific communities and the solutions implemented by the Plateau de Saclay services and infrastructures.

A supportive ecosystem for the scientific community

The event was introduced by Kees van der Beek, Vice-President for Research at the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, and Etienne Augé, Vice-President for Open Science at the Université Paris-Saclay. It began with a presentation of national policies to support research data management, using the example of the Recherche Data Gouv ecosystem.

Feedback from the scientific communities, particularly in biology, climate and space sciences, highlighted the importance of infrastructures in supporting research data management. While one of the major challenges is to cope with the exponential production of data, the infrastructures attest to the key role they play in ensuring data quality, implementing secure data sharing and access conditions, and providing a range of data processing and visualization services, all thanks to the expertise developed within their teams. The CoreTrustSeal label obtained by IDOC and ESPRI testifies to the quality of the services offered to users in line with the principles of open science, while CASD stands out as a trusted service providing scientists with secure access to sensitive data.

The last part of the day was dedicated to research support services, in particular documentation services and computing centers that also help scientists manage their research data. The DatASaclay network of experts at the University of Paris-Saclay was awarded the "Atelier de la donnée" label for the support it provides to scientific communities, while continuing to develop its services (temporary data storage, electronic laboratory notebook solution, flash training courses). At the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, the Libraries and the Computing Center are working on structuring and networking their services and skills in order to offer complementary support to the research teams within their scope.

Collaboration leads within the Saclay ecosystem

The presentations and discussions allowed the various institutions and structures on the Plateau de Saclay to reflect on the strategy to be implemented to ensure the quality of the services provided and to meet the challenges of sharing research data.

One of the common threads running through the day was the idea of networking Saclay's services and infrastructures in order to meet the challenges of raising the profile of these structures and promoting collaboration at the regional level. While the project to label the Plateau de Saclay computing center is a concrete example of cooperation between the Université Paris-Saclay, the CNRS and the Institut Polytechnique de Paris, other avenues of cooperation were also discussed, such as the exchange of information and best practices between services, the joint support of structures under joint supervision, and the organization of other events on the issues raised by research data. These leads remain to be explored in order to provide optimal support to our scientific communities
