Health, social security and grants

Because safety, as well as social and medical support are paramount to us, the Institut Polytechnique de Paris offers services that cover all the medical and social needs of its students and staff.
Please note that social security coverage is compulsory in France when you enroll in a higher education institution.
The registration is free of charge and will allow you to be reimbursed for any health expenses resulting from illness or maternity throughout your academic year.
Exceptions:
- Students from one of the 27 countries in the European Union, Ireland, Lichtenstein, Norway or Switzerland who already have national health insurance coverage and possess a European Health Insurance Card. This card gives you free access to public health care during your stay in France for the same cost and conditions as in your home country.
- Students from Quebec are exempt from social security coverage upon presentation of the #SE401Q106 formula.
Social security coverage is effective as soon as you arrive in France on the website ameli for international students.
You will be able to obtain better medical coverage by signing up for complementary mutual insurance (non-compulsory).
To find out more about what a mutual insurance company can do for you, visit this page.
Civil liability insurance is compulsory.
Civil liability insurance covers civil law provisions. Civil liability insurance policies cover damage you may cause to others or to their property. It is compulsory for students enrolled in French higher education institutions to take out civil liability insurance for their studies (including work placements).
It can be included in various insurance packages (bank insurance, home insurance, car insurance, mutual insurance) or you can take it out independently for less than €20/year (below are three examples of civil liability insurance for students):
The Institut Polytechnique de Paris, with the help of its five member schools, has set up a student health service on campus that is being developed with your help and for all students on campus.

A coordinator is on hand to welcome and guide you.
She is also responsible for setting up awareness and prevention campaigns throughout the year.
Your Health Unit Coordinator - Ms Elisabeth Rossi - can be contacted
- By telephone on 01 69 33 39 31 or 06 69 59 99 24

Orsay hospital is part of the Nord Essonne hospital group and is located at 4 Place du Général Leclerc in Orsay.
You can contact the hospital on 01 69 29 75 75.
The adult emergency department at Orsay hospital is located on the ground floor of the general building.
It welcomes patients 24 hours a day, for medical, surgical or psychiatric reasons, from the age of 15 years and 3 months.
What you need to bring with you to the emergency department (as far as possible): identity card, carte vitale or certificate of entitlement (ameli), contact details, prescriptions for any medicines you are currently taking, results of any tests you have had (X-rays, laboratory tests, etc.).
There are two pharmacies on campus where you can buy medicines with or without a prescription: Pharmacie de Lozère (15 min walk) or Pharmacie des écoles (10 min bus ride, Place des causeuses in Palaiseau).
To buy medicines with a prescription from your doctor, you will need to show your carte vitale or your certificate of entitlement (ameli) to obtain partial reimbursement from the social security system, as well as your third-party payment card if you have a mutual insurance company.
If you have a carte vitale, you will be reimbursed automatically, but if you do not yet have one (e.g. as a new student), the pharmacy will need to provide you with a treatment form, which you will need to complete and send to the CPAM (Caisse primaire d'assurance maladie) to request reimbursement.
The Moulon medical center, located in Gif-sur-Yvette and accessible from the campus, includes 2 general practitioners, one of whom also practises gynaecology, an osteopath, a clinical psychologist and a speech therapist.

You can also call 01 53 66 64 27 (secretariat) or 01 69 85 33 13 (medical practice).

The BAPU team is made up of psychoanalysts (psychiatrists and psychologists), social workers, university lecturers and administrative staff.
The first consultations, known as intake interviews, enable the student's request to be clarified.
During these, psychotherapy may be initiated with the therapist initially met.
The responses provided and the length of time students spend at the centre vary, depending on each student and the type of difficulties they are experiencing.
Several options are available:
- One-off consultations, with or without referral to another structure
- Supportive psychotherapy, for a limited period of time
- Psychoanalytical psychotherapy.
To benefit from the BAPUs, you must have student status and be affiliated to a health insurance scheme.
